Super rare Lane C. Moller 6 string Acoustic Guitar – Vintage
Super rare Lane C. Moller 6 string Acoustic Guitar – Vintage The signed label states 1978, #115 Lane C. Moller. The “Baden” badge on the head indicates that this was a custom made guitar. In the 1970’s, Lane C. Moller was a famous (and soon to be infamous) luthier from California. He built handmade custom guitars for MANY famous guitar player. He built for David Crosby, Johnny Cash, Lindsey Buckingham, and Don Mock to name but a few. He was a consummate marketer of his guitars. He was always following famous guitar players around and offering his services. David Crosby’s Moller guitar sold for $6,800 last year and Buckingham’s sold for $14K+ in 2020. I spoke to Moller’s business partner from the 1970s. He had many good things to say about the quality of the instruments they turned out. An interesting point he made is that Moller labeled his custom guitars with the badges like we see on this guitar. So…. I am going to postulate, with no proof whatsoever, that this guitar was built for Baden Powell. So… about the guitar. Full bodied, loud guitar. Moller said the unique shape helped produce a loud sound. His business partner was not convinced of that. It is all in one piece, with no unrepaired through cracks. There is an old repair to one of the sides. I would say that it was NOT professionally repair. But, the crack is solid and stable. Might have Gorilla glue holding it together. The whole guitar is very well braced, no loose braces from what I can tell. The finish is crackled and checked, quite substantially all over the instrument. His partner told me this is the result of atmospherics on the finish they used. I was also told there is probably a dual truss rod in the neck. You can see the adjustment nut on the inside of the belly. The neck is fully attached and stable. The action at the first fret is wonderful. The 12th fret may be a tad high. (I measure 0.105”-0.110” at the 12th fret on the low E). Very playable but maybe a tad high. Also, there are 3 places on the top surface where a player/finger picker has damaged the finish. In the usual places. The neck is awesome as are the inlays. ** SEE PHOTOS. ASK QUESTIONS. If you are in the DC area, swing my to look at it.
